We get a lot of questions about what causes a gas golf cart to backfire and how to solve that problem. It is usually an adjustment issue and relatively easy to remedy. In almost all cases, whether it is a 2 cycle or 4 cycle engine, golf cart backfiring is caused by the accelerator cable being out of adjustment at the throttle plate of the carburetor.
This problem has a relatively simple cure. With the ignition key in the OFF position and the seat completely removed, press the accelerator pedal down. Depending on the golf cart brand and model, this accelerator micro switch may be located around the pedal itself or possibly mounted to the inside of the front wall of the engine compartment.
Once you identify where your accelerator micro switch is located, press the accelerator pedal down again and listen for its click, while looking at the carburetor throttle plate. For proper symbiosis between the fuel and ignition systems, the accelerator micro switch must click BEFORE the throttle lever of the carburetor moves.
The accelerator cable may move through the plate, but the plate itself cannot move prior to the micro switch click. If you find the throttle plate moves prior to the click, you will need to make adjustments. The needed adjustment to remedy golf cart backfiring will vary between manufacturers and year models. Be sure to double check your adjustment against the micro switch click for good measure. Other golf carts may not have accelerator cables, but rather system of rods between the accelerator pedal and the carburetor.
In this case, you generally have to adjust the length of the last accelerator rod before the carburetor to allow the throttle plate to close fully. As above, always be sure to check your adjustment afterwards to ensure proper function.

This allows fuel to flow into the cylinder before the ignition system is activated to produce a spark for combustion. Instead of igniting a small amount of fuel when working properly, a larger amount collects and you get a significant explosion, which is called a back fire.

The hole pattern was designed by tracing it from the kick starter three-hole flywheel pattern.
Hex screws. The large hole in the center fits very closely right up to the crank threads. Aluminum helps here too! The three tapped holes give a place to store the screws and flat washers. It was easier to tap using a slightly oversize tap drill from normal. I asked a lot of questions about carburetors and different things. Tech Answer Dan, I can almost always suggest that a member, especially a new member, obtain material covering their scooter. And you quickly learned what scooter you actually had. I find that many people are not aware of the many different Cushman models. Part of the fun is learning about your scooter and others. I would like to go with a standard golf tire if possible. Tech Answer The Terra Tires were very wide with low pressure iron and were extremely heavy. They were also extremely hard to work on as they were nearly a foot wide.
I am guessing that replacement tires would be near impossible to find. Most of these golfsters were sold equipped with more conventional wheels and tires. The front fork is special for these wide terra tires but can work with other tires.
I suggest you study your golfster and compare it with ones having the more regular tires to determine which items you need to change. Manuals, hubs, rims and tires are listed for sale occasionally. Check with Robert Cantrell for a manual, too. How can we tell if it is getting gas to the cylinder?
Try to start it, then pull the plug. Hold the plug in one hand and smack it and your hand into a clean piece of paper in the other hand in a clapping motion to see if any fuel is to the plug. It was equipped with split washers under the head bolt nuts with no flat washers and had a blown head gasket.Base line Settings.

Your settings with engine running. It is important to follow all linkage and lever installation instructions. The number one and two reasons for tuning errors are improper linkage installations and over tightened linkage nut, causing a binding in linkage assembly. Start set up by confirming carb base line settings.
Do not depend on the factory delivered settings. Check them before the carb is installed. All settings are done with choke disengaged or warmed up so that the choke is fully opened and disengaged. This is done on automatic choke carburetors by first opening the choke butterfly by hand and inserting a wood block or wedge of some kind to hold open while the linkage is cycled linkage operated through its full movement to clear the choke cam. You will hear a metallic click as the cam is released.
You can check the fast Idle screw under the choke assembly to confirm that it is not in contact with the choke fast idle cam. Cycle the linkage again to be sure that the linkage comes to close without any assistance. Set the mixture screw see Fig 1 by first screwing in until the screw stops, bottoms out. Back out the screw 2 full turns. Simple Rules for low speed calibration.
If the speed screw has to be opened 2 or more turns then this is also an indication of a lean condition usually requiring greater change. At times it may appear to be showing signs of richness or flooding it is really a lean condition.
See pictures and notes in the tech 2 article supplied in the kit instructions, view and please understand the need to keep throttle plate as near to closed as possible so as not to prematurely expose the transition holes.
This is what causes the visible rich condition, and confirms the need to increase the jet size. Achieving the best idle at under 2 turns indicates the need for a smaller idle jet. Start the engine, the engine will run very slowly more like a tractor. As long as the engine stays running idle speed is not important at this point. The first thing to do is not set up the idle speed, but to set the Idle mixture screw to lean best idle setting.
The engine should pick up speed and begin to smooth out.
Use your ear, not a scope or tuning instruments at this point. You want to tune the engine by sound. Adjust to best, fastest and smoothest running point. Now that the mixture screw is at its best running location, you can adjust the Idle speed the screw. Check and set idle to your driving preference. Recheck timing and vacuum hook ups. Recheck mixture screw to lean best idle again.

You can adjust the carburetor in just a few minutes. The carburetor uses a low-speed and high-speed set screw that you can adjust fairly easily with just a screwdriver. The high-speed set screw includes a "T" on the end, allowing you to adjust the screw by hand. Locate the idle set screw at the very bottom of the Tillotson carburetor. Turn it clockwise with a screwdriver until you completely close it without over-tightening the screw.
Find the low-speed adjustment screw with the "L" next to it on the carburetor body. Turn the low-speed screw all the way clockwise and back it out counterclockwise one and a half turns.
How to Adjust a Tillotson Carburetor
Locate the high-speed adjustment screw with the "H" on the body. Turn the high-speed screw all the way clockwise and back it off counterclockwise three-quarters of a turn. Start the motor and let it warm up for a few minutes.
If the engine is having trouble starting, adjust the low-speed screw just a bit to get it started. Turn the low-speed screw until you can hear the motor slow down. Adjust the screw as slow as you can get the engine to run without stalling out.
