Peak output for the tuned WRX ends up at horsepower to all four wheels and lb-ft of torque to all four wheels. Of course, the STI with a tune will beat these numbers. The argument of course could be made that it would be interesting to see the FA20DIT with an extra half liter of displacement.
Is the EJ design beginning to show its age? It is worth noting that the WRX has a smaller twin scroll turbo as well which is why the low end is so good even with half a liter disadvantage. The higher compression helps too.
It would be cool but they will most likely keep the FA20DIT and just give it a bigger turbo and make it rev higher. The only way to increase displacement is to increase bore which gives you a very bad rod ratio and with increased piston surface area you are more prone to detonation. This is why the EJ25 has such a low CR and why almost no one uses higher compression with built subie motors. I wonder if they will make the new STI motor semi-closed deck like they currently are because the FA20 is all open deck.

As well, even if tuned, a WRX will still lack a robust 6-speed transmission. The new 6-speed in the WRX is still glassy…up the power and risk your transmission.
It is also still cable actuated. STIs will also eventually cook their brakes again, it depends on the track but not as drastically as the WRX. The first thing that comes to mind is the ringland issue that EJs tend to have. What do I mean by this?
Change your oil as recommended in the manual. Check the oil religiously and ensure the oil is at a satisfactory level. Running a tune? I agree with a lot of your opinions. My WRX is my 3rd Subaru. Other two was an 03 WRX and an 05 Sti. I got the new WRX just because I wanted new tech. As far as an Sti being better bang for buck in stock form I disagree. The price difference between an Sti and a WRX is healthy and the money could be better spent on mods.
Now that was a true race car. But like you said this is just my opinion.
